Data Cards and USB Modems

By admin | April 4, 2008

Mobile broadband hardware is being developed at such a rate that it’s hard to keep up with what’s available to get you mobile broadband for your laptop.

At the moment there are two main types of mobile internet devices: USB Modems and Data Cards.

USB modems are small, portable units (about the same size as a mobile phone) which plug directly into the side of your laptop. Also reffered to as a "Dongle", USB modems are currently the most popular form of 3G internet access, and because it works via the USB port can be used in conjunction with any computer/device - not just a laptop.

Data Cards, on the otherhand, either come ready fitted to some newer computers, or are purchased seperately and fitted to a specifically designed slot on the laptop. This type of functionality is like that of a sim-card and accesses the 3G network in a similar way.

USB modems have now been refined to give variations on size / shape / colour so customers can select a model to suit their individual taste.
