Why do I have to pick between Dish Network vs Direct TV?

Is it me or is the decision to select a satellite service provider a difficult one? Dish Network vs Direct TV: I get confused by all the advertisements which are seemingly everywhere on these two services. Each company supposedly provides the “best” selection and the “best” service but who is to really know which is the better of the two. I know that if you ask a dozen people who subscribe to each you will get pretty much the same answer. In my uneducated research that means the majority of each like the service they have. So how does that help me make a decision between the two?
