Grandfather’s Stories

By admin | July 3, 2009

My grandfather, as he constantly reminded us kids via stories, memories, and the like, was a naval fighter pilot during World War II.  The old man saw many a battle over the Pacific and sailed from the Aleutian Islands of Alaska to the serine waters of Hawaii.  Despite all these experiences and the fact that he literally traveled the world he decided, once the war came to a close, to he decided to travel home to the family homestead in Arkansas to resume his life as a pig farmer.  Good ole gramps had been raising pigs his entire life and, even though he came to realize an entire world existed outside of his little town, he couldn’t resist returning to his home and the job he loved.  While I decided to move away from our little country town for some, it’s a way of life so ingrained that it can’t be abandoned.

I guess what I’m trying to say is, I don’t think you can measure life in terms of years. I think longevity doesn’t necessarily have anything to do with happiness. I mean happiness comes from facing challenges and going out on a limb and taking risks…
