You shouldn’t limit yourself to only knowing how to read guitar tabs

By admin | May 13, 2008

The other day I was in the music store, listening to these two kids talk about their supposedly up-and-coming band. They were checking out some of the new merchandise so the clerk approached them, inquiring as to whether they needed help or not. Soon he began conversing with them about their repertoire and the topic of finding new songs to play came up. Apparently they all use the internet to find guitar tabs online. The clerk admitted to barely being able to read actual musical notation, which surprised me. It’s difficult to convey to some people that although knowing how to read guitar tabs is a helpful tool, actually knowing how to interpret musical notes on a page lends something to your music as well. I find that most of the musicians I work with have better technical ability once they’ve learned to read sheet music, although there are exceptions.
