Why do an employee background check?

I used to wonder my employers were so strict about doing an employee background check. That is until I had a very interesting and very scary experience. Sitting in my little cube one day, my home away from home, I was doing my usual duties. All of the sudden, I was surprised by an announcement that all employees must vacate the premises. As it turned out, our newest employee was actually an escaped convict. They had let him start work the day before his records had arrived. The authorities arrested him on the spot and we were all very shaken by the experience. I will never complain about company policies such as this ever again!
