Are there any legitimate second chance checking accounts?

I am generally a cautious person by nature and lately I have been wondering if there are any legitimate second chance checking accounts available. Most of the financial institutions that I see that offer them, are names that I have never heard of. We never planned on having bad credit but those extra medical bills from last year really did a lot of damage to our credit rating. Now we are just trying to pick up the pieces and get a checking account and a debit card so we can live as normal as possible. We need to climb out of this.
