the only way to get over your relationship

By admin | July 29, 2009

The cold turkey mandate may seem insensitive and extreme but the only way to get over your relationship is to stay away from your ex. What this means is that you must have no contact whatsoever – no driving past his/her apartment, no emails, no anonymous phone calls – nothing! This rule will be extremely difficult to follow, of course, if you must see your ex on a daily basis through work, school, or some other activity where you are forced to be in close proximity. But the reason for the rule is quite elementary. Getting over someone for whom you once cared will be easier if you try to avoid him/her. And you should never compromise your self respect by begging for another chance or stalking your ex to see if he/she has replaced you. If you must, for whatever reason, maintain some sort of contact, the best thing to do is to feign indifference. In time, this may be your true emotion but in order to get past the first few days or weeks you need to pay special attention to your own needs. When you find yourself thinking about your ex, wondering what might have been, change the channel in your mind, just as you would if you were watching a boring TV show. At this point in your recovery, you can’t afford the luxury of negative thinking. If you concentrate your efforts on mending your hurt feelings and doing what’s best for the long term, it will get easier and you will soon be able to move on without a second thought.
