Is Your Hunting Dog Prone to Mats on Their Ears?

By admin | September 29, 2008

When you are out hunting in the field with your hunting dogs, it is inevitable that you will at one time or another have to deal with mats in their ears. All mats are is clumps of fur that get tangled up and knotted up. The quicker you remove these nuisances, the better. It is a relatively easy procedure, providing you have the patience and correct tool. First you should try to loosen the mats with your fingers, and then take a strong dog comb with teeth that are fairly close together and gently comb out small sections at a time. If you are unable to untangle them this way, the last solution is to cut the mat away, making sure you don’t cut the ear, which could lead to infection.
