High Blood Pressure Can Lead To An Enlarged Heart

By admin | February 28, 2008

More people than ever before, especially in countries such as the United States, are suffering from high blood pressure which often creeps up on you without any warning and can literally stop you dead in your tracks.

High blood pressure can affect many areas of the body but is perhaps most commonly associated with damage to your arteries and heart and is a leading cause of coronary artery disease. Perhaps less well known is the fact that high blood pressure can also produce a life-threatening enlargement of the heart. High blood pressure causes the heart to work harder to pump blood around your body and, just as exercising your muscles causes them to get bigger, so this results in an enlargement of the left ventricle of the heart. The left ventricle is then no longer able to expand sufficiently to fill with blood and so cannot pump enough blood around your body, resulting in heart attack or heart failure and, sometimes, sudden coronary death.
