1. Variable deductibles and co-payments. Look for a company which will allow you to vary both your annual deductible and co-payments. This allows you to adjust the overall cost of your plan by fitting it to your state of health and need for medical treatment.
2. Reasonable out-of-pocket expenses. Look for a company which places a reasonable limit on the amount of out-of-pocket expenses which you will have to pay each year as these can mount up very quickly in the event of serious illness.
3. Waiver of premiums. Find a company that will allow you to skip payments during lengthy periods of illness. This is not always necessary but, if you find yourself unable to work for any length of time as a result of illness, it could become essential.
