Customer Logons

I am wondering if it would be helpful to require people to create logons in order to use my website, or if that would just make people more likely to use other similar sites. If they had to logon I would have information and could have them opt to receive news about sales and maybe generate more business since I could market to the people who already use the site. I would be interested in finding some internet based business coaching in order to explore this issue further and decide what to do about this, as it would be helpful to market direct to previous customers.
